Top Things to Buy for Better Sleep

If you knew me, you would know that I’m pretty obsessed with doing everything I can to get better sleep.

I’ve taken some pretty strong measures to ensure that when my head hits the pillow at night, there’s nothing stopping me from getting the best sleep of my life.

I thought it might be fun to share with you all the things that I’ve purchased and incorporated into my night time routine that have set me up to get great sleep.

If you didn’t know already, I’m here to inform you that body temperature is vital to getting a good night’s sleep. With that being said, you need to do everything you can to regulate your room temperature and your body temperature at night. In the winter, I use a temperature regulating space heater. This allows me to keep the whole house cooler at night, but to make sure my room stays between 68-72 degrees (which is the ideal sleep temperature).

This heater by Dreo is the one I’ve loved the most. It’s super affordable, compact, stylish and works like a dream. You can set your ideal temperature, and the heater will turn on and off to maintain your set temp. It’s got a tilt sensor for safety, and is built with flame retardant materials to protect from overheating.

In the summer I use a cooling fan that also doubles as my air purifier. Below is one that I like by Dyson, but any fan or air purifier will be beneficial. The quality of your air can also greatly affect your sleep. Getting pure clean air will help significantly with getting better sleep.

Dyson Pure Cool – Air Purifier and Fan. This is not an actual air conditioner, but a cooling fan. This fan is quiet, puts out great airflow and air circulation. It also removes odors and small particles from the air. My favorite thing about it is the sleek look. It fits quite nicely in my bedroom.

Did you know that air quality affects your sleep?! Lack of fresh air, and high levels of Carbon Dioxide make you 60% more likely to have bad sleep. Since you breath OUT carbon dioxide at night, this raises the levels in your bedroom as you sleep. Especially if you share a room. So what can you get to correct this? You could open a window at night, or if that’s not an option for you: Plants!

Specifically Peace lily, Snake Plant, Orchids, Aloe, Spider Plant, Pothos, Bamboo, and more. These plants specifically release oxygen at night lowering the overall CO2 levels in your room. Don’t worry if you don’t have a green thumb, these plants are pretty easy to care for and beginner friendly!

Next let’s talk bedding. I’m not even going to go over how important it is to have a good mattress. When you spend 1/3 of your life laying on something. It’s a pretty big deal if you want better sleep. Get Whichever type of mattress suits you, spend the money because it’s worth it! At the very least get a good mattress topper. Did you know you’re supposed to get a new mattress every 7-10 years?

This Elemuse Duel Layer 3″ mattress topper in particular is my cup of tea. You have a memory foam layer, with a 1″ pillow top cover as well. This is my ideal comfort recipe, but of course find what works for you! Everyone is an individual.

You should sigh a wonderful sign of happiness when you slide into your sheets at night. I know everyone is going to have their own opinion, but since I’ve bought bamboo sheets, I will NEVER go back. And this is coming from someone that used to sleep on Egyptian Cotton. I find them to be silky, cooling, lightweight and super soft. And of course I’ve got my favorite linked for you in the description.

I sleep with these Hotel Direct Bamboo sheets year round. They keep you cool in the summer, warm in the winter and are moisture wicking. They are very lightweight but durable. I’ve had mine for over 5 years and they are holding up great!

Silk Pillow Case: One caveat in the sheet department, is that I do have a separate Silk pillowcase, specifically because it’s good for the skin and hair. This is the one I use: 100% Mulberry Silk Pillow Case

Of course you want to get a pillow for the type of sleeper you are, back side or stomach. BTW if you’re wondering, the best position is to sleep on your back overall. Another thing you are going to have to pry from my cold, dead hands is my purple pillow.

I have never loved a pillow like I love the Purple Harmony Pillow. This pillow is made of durable material so it holds its shape, and does not hold heat. They have a really good return policy, so you don’t really have much to lose trying it. I originally got the low, and ended up trading it in for the medium height as a back/side sleeper.

My pillow obsession goes deep, because the other thing I can’t sleep without is my feather body pillow. It’s impossible to be unhappy when hugging a feather body pillow, prove me wrong.

I’m pretty firm on the type of materials I’ll sleep with. I made sure to get a body pillow that was feather, and 100% cotton. That’s why I went with the Pillowtex body pillow.  This pillow also certifies that the feathers are not live plucked. Yes, sometimes I will get a quill poking out, but it’s a small price to pay.

Rounding out the bedding I’ve got two blankets that have been life changing. First is my weighted blanket. If I’m particularly in need of anxiety reduction or I’ve had a hard day, I add my weighted blanket to my bed for the night. It’s like getting a hug while you sleep and adds a sense of calm and security.

This Bare Home weighted blanket is 100% cotton and weighted with non-toxic glass beads. You can machine wash this blanket which is a HUGE bonus. You’ve got tons of color, size and weight options so you can find the perfect blanket for you!

And finally, find yourself the fluffiest comfort on earth. Because I want my bed to feel like a fluffy cloud just begging to be slept in. It’s cotton and feather filled, and I throw this thing in the regular old washing machine.

This is the one I’ve got on my bed. And if you can’t tell by the photo, it’s very comfy! It’s breathable, down fiber filled, and the exterior is 100% Cotton. Pro tip: I have a queen sized bed, but ordered the king size for a slightly oversized fit on my bed.

This next one is a MUST, it’s more important than people realize and that is the importance of having a dark room when you sleep. I have spend years on the quest for the darkest and most effective blackout curtains, and THIS is the style you need. Just the regular hanging curtains are fine, but it’s more difficult to prevent cracks of light. These shades are the ones you need, trust me.

These shades are great because you can order the specific size you need for your windows. And as you can imagine, getting a perfect fit is necessary for ultimate darkness. These shades are nice because they also block UV rays, provide insulation and noise reduction too!

Sleep Eye Mask: If you’re in a pinch and you’re traveling or you just can’t get your room darker than a cave. This is going to be your best option: I never travel without this eye mask. MZOO Sleep Eye Mask

I’m sure you know about the white noise thing and how effective it is at drowning out ambient noise that can wake you up, especially if you live with other people. But did you know that white noise is a tiny bit controversial? Basically some have said that the constant stimulation can be bad for your brain, and your ears need a break from the constant noise.

That’s why I recommend THIS white noise machine. You can set sleep routines and basically customize your sounds and when you want them to play! I also love this because it doubles as a sunrise alarm clock.

It’s actually not great for us to be startled awake by an offensive alarm clock every morning. Which is why the Hatch Restore 2 is great. You can choose to wake up to a simulated sunrise, along with a soothing sound of your choice. You can customize your own perfect sleep and wake routine to fit your needs. It’s genius!

Magnesium before bed. Not everyone needs magnesium, but like 75% of the population isn’t getting enough magnesium. It’s great to take before bed for relaxation and calm.

This is my new favorite Magnesium I just started taking. It’s backed by tons of scientific studies linked on the companies website. You only need one pill for a full dose, and this magnesium is much more absorbable and bioavailable than other types of magnesium.

This is great for creating a calming ambience. Diffuse your favorite calming essential oil into your room before bed as part of your night time routine. Some of the best oils for relaxation include: Lavender, Chamomile, Sandalwood, Clary Sage, Valerian, Jasmine, Basil, Rose, Ylang Ylang, Frankincense, Geranium and more.

Really any diffuser is going to do the trick. I like this one because it looks nice on a bedside table and can double as a humidifier and has several different timer settings.

This is for effective night time breathing. If you or your partner has trouble breathing at night, try these nose strips to open your airways. Additionally, it’s not good for us to breath through out mouths at night. That’s where mouth tape comes in. It forces you to maintain healthy nose breathing throughout the night.

This could be for you to use, or for you to benefit from if you have a partner that snores. Sometimes the solution is as easy as opening up the nasal passages to create easier night time breathing. It’s worth a try! I love these for myself during allergy season. I typically wake up with less congestion and breathing issues.
What is a calming night time routine without relaxing our mind. I love using headspace as a way to get my mind ready to rest for the night. You can use this for pre-sleep meditation, or while you are laying in bed to help you doze off.
I primarily use headspace for the relaxation and meditation functions. I love to wind down for the evening with a little pre-bedtime meditation session before hopping into the cloud I’ve created of my bed.
